MUMBAI: Despite a committee set up in 2006 for implementing safety guidelines for suburban railways when a litigant said all was still not well in the city, the Bombay HC on Thursday asked lawyers appearing on both sides to appear before the committee and point out instances of accidents.
Meanwhile, the state and railways also kept passing the buck on who should arrange for ambulances outside stations for accident victims.
A bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice G S Godbole was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Sameer Zaveri who as a commuter had met with an accident and lost his limbs. The bench directed the parties to work out a common plan during the next committee meeting.
When amicus curiae (friend of court) Jamshed Mistry pointed out that implementation of safety norms was unsatisfactory, advocate Suresh Kumar appearing for the railways said "We accept that accidents have been taking place," but added that the number of accidents overall had fallen.
